I think people are forgetting that these books are about the world of Westeros and not just individual characters. Yes the characters obviously help advance the story but they are not the focus. It’s the entire world of A Song of Ice and Fire. All your lovable characters will be back in ADWD. This book gives us a chance to see the rest of the cast which I think is fascinating. I think it’s great in this book how George gives us a view of places we havent seen yet. And for all you people complaining, GET OVER IT! He’s a writer. We’re quirky people by nature and usually move to our own beat. This man has a life and he will finish the books in his own time. If you don’t like it stop reading, but you know you’ll be back.

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4) Overview

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace…only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears….With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes…and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.

Stranger in a Strange Land Review

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, a written language was created soon to be followed by the first fictional story by the first novelist. In these days, long before television and the movies, but long after the introduction of the play and theater the novel was a shared experience. The author would set the stage and introduce the players and provide his audience of one with a framework in which to develop his or hers own ideas about what was important, and to take those words in the context they were presented and broaden their horizon and plumb their greater depths. Like the theater authors wanted each individual to get something different from the words between the covers.

Perhaps it is TV, perhaps it is the cinema, perhaps it is the desire to convert, quickly and easily the written word into one or other of these forms, but readers today do not seem to want to do as much thinking about things. Everything must be so literal, everything must be fully questioned and answered or the content is discarded as valueless.

When I first read this book, it made me ask questions, I was young, unwise, and needing as much to ask the questions as find the answers. My most recent reading had me answering questions that were asked by the book, answers that, whilst being uncomfortable at times, helped me look around me a little more closely and gain a better understanding of my world. I did not get all the answers, nor, I suspect, were all the answers I got correct; but I got something.

I do not like to fault a book for being written in another time and place, there are always truths that apply throughout both, and although this book does not reach 2010 unscathed by the passing of time it still carries with it the ability to make the reader think far beyond the themes espoused in works purporting to be the philosophical treatise of our time.

I recommend this book to those who have the time to give it some time and mind to give it some mind. But if you want a quick and easy read that stimulates the heart but flutters inconsequently across the brain, skip it; it is not for you.

Stranger in a Strange Land Overview

One of the greatest science fiction novels ever published, Stranger in a Strange Land’s original manuscript had 50,000 words cut. Now they have been reinstated for this special 30th anniversary trade edition. A Mars-born earthling arrives on this planet for the first time as an adult, and the sensation he creates teaches Earth some unforgettable lessons. “A brilliant mind-bender.”–Kurt Vonnegut.

Stranger in a Strange Land Specifications

Stranger in a Strange Land, winner of the 1962 Hugo Award, is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, born during, and the only survivor of, the first manned mission to Mars. Michael is raised by Martians, and he arrives on Earth as a true innocent: he has never seen a woman and has no knowledge of Earth’s cultures or religions. But he brings turmoil with him, as he is the legal heir to an enormous financial empire, not to mention de facto owner of the planet Mars. With the irascible popular author Jubal Harshaw to protect him, Michael explores human morality and the meanings of love. He founds his own church, preaching free love and disseminating the psychic talents taught him by the Martians. Ultimately, he confronts the fate reserved for all messiahs.

The impact of Stranger in a Strange Land was considerable, leading many children of the 60’s to set up households based on Michael’s water-brother nests. Heinlein loved to pontificate through the mouths of his characters, so modern readers must be willing to overlook the occasional sour note (”Nine times out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it’s partly her fault.”). That aside, Stranger in a Strange Land is one of the master’s best entertainments, provocative as he always loved to be. Can you grok it? –Brooks Peck

Different Seasons (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) Review

Special Price Here

This collection of novellas should easily be counted among King’s best works. Of the four tales contained here, three have been made into successful motion pictures, two of which I would rank among my top fifty favorite films. Contained in this collection are: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, The Body (better known from the film version titled “Stand By Me”), and The Breathing Method. The stories are all very well different and for the most part stray away from the horror genre for which King is most well known although all of them do contain something fairly horrifying at some point or another and I would consider Apt Pupil to be among some of his scariest tales.

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption: This is a tale of the friendship between two men that happen to be incarcerated in Shawshank prison. this tale showcases King’s strong character development skills and contains enough twists and turns to keep the storyline moving at a pace that keeps the reader interested. All in all an extremely enjoyable and well written story that translated into a great movie.

Apt Pupil: To be perfectly blunt, this one scared the bejeepers out of me. Not in a spooky scary sort of way, but in a holy crap the two main characters are truly evil sort of way. This “buddy” tale takes the notion of the evil that resides inside of each of us to an entirely new level as a young boy befriends an elderly gentleman who he believes is actually a Nazi war criminal in hiding. The resulting relationship formed between the two is truly chilling. I don’t recall too much about the film version of this one, I guess I’ll have to watch it again.

The Body: This coming of age story centers on a group of four boys on a journey to see the dead body of a boy that they all once knew. Their adventure takes place over a several day trek along the railroad tracks. Along the way, they all take a journey within themselves and an adventure that started out as something fun becomes instead a somber trek of self-discovery and maturing. The movie Stand By Me was made from this novella and follows the storyline very closely, I can’t help but picture Will Wheaton, River Phoenix and the others from the movie cast when reading this.

The Breathing Method: This is actually a frame story in which an outer tale serves as the setting for a tale to be told within the story. The outer storyline focuses on a man who is invited to join an exclusive club of sorts by one of his coworkers. At the club, members take turns from time to time telling tales, the best of which are reserved for Christmas. The story of “The Breathing Method” is actually the Christmas tale for that particular year and is the strange story of a doctor and a pregnant unwed mother. Both the outer and inner tales contain an element of the supernatural. Some consider this to be the most well-written piece in the collection. While I don’t necessarily agree with that notion myself, I did find it to be a fairly entertaining piece and a nice end-cap to a very strong collection.

Different Seasons (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) Overview

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. A collection of four tales of outlandish, commonplace and surprising terror.

Different Seasons (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) Specifications

Different Seasons (1982) is a collection of four novellas, markedly different in tone and subject, each on the theme of a journey. The first is a rich, satisfying, nonhorrific tale about an innocent man who carefully nurtures hope and devises a wily scheme to escape from prison. The second concerns a boy who discards his innocence by enticing an old man to travel with him into a reawakening of long-buried evil. In the third story, a writer looks back on the trek he took with three friends on the brink of adolescence to find another boy’s corpse. The trip becomes a character-rich rite of passage from youth to maturity.

These first three novellas have been made into well-received movies: “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” into Frank Darabont’s 1994 The Shawshank Redemption (available as a screenplay, a DVD film, and an audiocassette), “Apt Pupil” into Bryan Singer’s 1998 film Apt Pupil (also released in 1998 on audiocassette), and “The Body” into Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me (1986).

The final novella, “Breathing Lessons,” is a horror yarn told by a doctor, about a patient whose indomitable spirit keeps her baby alive under extraordinary circumstances. It’s the tightest, most polished tale in the collection. –Fiona Webster

American Fairy Tales Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

This book gives interesting stories with a moral at the end of each story and has illustrations on each page. The stories vary in length but can be read quickly due to the author’s writing style. While different from “Oz” books, these stories are still a lot of fun.

American Fairy Tales Overview

American Fairy Tales by L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz, is exactly what its title describes. The European fairy tale tradition is so strong that few associate “fairy tale” with American stories and storytellers, despite the rich and enduring output of their most successful creator, L. Frank Baum. Most are familiar with “tall tales” and characters like Paul Bunyan and John Henry — these are of course fairy tales as well, of a peculiarly American stamp. But just as Alice fell down the rabbit hole chasing after the White Rabbit, so were Dorothy and Toto carried from their Kansas farm by the Tornada. With stories ranging from “The King of the Polar Bears” to “The Capture of Father Time,” this book is bound to please readers of all ages.

Undead and Unpopular (Queen Betsy, Book 5) Review

Hot!!!

Betsy is back. And this time she’s decided to give up drinking blood. And she has lots of unscheduled visitors to her home at all sorts of hours and it’s great.

Still more like lots of little sub-plots, but I am also still glad about that. I read this one in a little more then a lunch hour.

I am a little bummed that there is apparently a short story between the last one and this one – which explains Garrett (formerly known as George the fiend) and Toni the werewolf’s relationship. And as a result of Toni, we saw basically no George. Which mad me sad. I don’t want another peripheral character to come into the picture if all said character is going to do is take one of my favorite characters out of the picture.

To even that out, we get quite a bit of Cathie – the ghost from the last book. And I am not so sure I like her. She reminds me to much of the way the Ant interacts with Betsy and one character being that way is enough.

I am glad Jessica gets some more time in this book, but I was sad that it was done via an illness. I guess the idea of Betsy turning one or more of her friends had to be addressed at some point and this was a way to do it. But hearing that Jess is cured at the end would have been really nice.

The “European” vamps were poised to be scary but totally weren’t. That’s keeping in line with the fact that these books are definitely the lighter side of vampire para-romance (versus the dark series like BDB and Midnight Breed, etc. or even for as poorly as they are written the Sizemore Prime books). I was a little shocked by the Zombie sub-plot. Not so much the existence of it, but the way it was resolved. I expected there to be more to it. But maybe more will come of the existence of Zombies in general in the next books.

John’s book subplot was really the worst part of this book. I get that John is likely to get his “Bees” (as Betsy calls them) back together or he’s going to try for revenge against Betsy as a result but please don’t subject me to that. Leave this subplot in the dust of this particular installment? Please? I would rather see way more of Sophie and Liam (although the way Liam handles that situation leaves me with questions…) Although, it was kind of funny to see that the title of the book was “undead and unwed” hehehe!

The steaminess continues to get better as the series progresses. It’s still no BDB, but they are enjoyable little scenes. And I like the development of Betsy – into someone not quite so “blond” (as another reviewer put it).

I also love the references to modern popular culture. I know some don’t – and some author’s don’t like to do it because it dates things (like one of the last of the “Prime” books I read had mention of a discman – wow, did that take me back!) but I loved the reference to Korben Dallas and the Fifth Element (I love that movie and am not ashamed to admit it!) – that earned a little ear marked page and I never ear mark pages!

I am looking forward to the wedding in this Series – maybe after that, we can get more romance for the other characters. Or just more “screen time” for the ones that are going on now (Jess and Nick would be a great perspective to see).

The writing is consistent with the rest of this series – I wouldn’t say it’s any better or any worse. The book was light hearted, funny, and a great escape from the seriousness of the contracts I was reviewing this morning. I am really bummed though that, from what I understand, undead and unwelcome is a new cover theme. I love the artwork on the series so far and I am totally NOT a fan of the cover I saw for that one.

Undead and Unpopular (Queen Betsy, Book 5) Overview

This New York Times bestselling author’s Undead series is more popular than ever!

With her birthday coming up, Betsy isn’t in the best frame of mind to face the powerful European vampires who have finally come to pay their respects. Playing politics is not her strong suit, especially when she finds out her best friend Jessica may have a life-threatening illness. Sure Betsy can save her life by taking it-isn’t that what friends are for?-but the choice isn’t in her hands.

With her fiancé Eric dodging all the wedding plans, Betsy’s plate is full-and not with birthday cake. But who has time to pout? Not even a reluctant vampire queen, who is taking it one high-heeled step at a time in MaryJanice Davidson’s creative, sophisticated, sexy, and wonderfully witty series.

Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1) Review

wow..talk about a fertile imagination! Harrison’s debut novel takes the whole ‘urban fantasy’ genre to the next level. She’s created a universe that’s a twisted and dark version of the one we live in.

Rachael Morgan is a runner for Inderland Security. She’s also a witch. She and her pixie backup, the oftentimes annoying but always helpful and entertaining Jenks try to keep order in the Hollows by bringing in those supernaturals who don’t always follow the rules.

What are the Hollows you ask? Well it’s the dark underbelly of Cincinnati. This goes back to what I said about the universe being a twisted and dark version of the one we live in. You see, in Harrison’s world there was a point in time in human history called the Turn. Decades ago scientists unlocked the secrets of human DNA, not unlike our own real history. However, Harrison turns this on its ear. In her universe, humankind never went to the moon.Science perverted the discovery of the secrets of human DNA and chose to manufacture bio weapons. In her universe, humankind never went to the moon because all the scientific advancement was used for people to crush their enemies using these bio weapons. The Turn as it’s called was the point in history when mankind nearly destroyed itself by shipping out these bio weapons hidden in TOMATOES of all things. Almost half the human population was eradicated. Enter: The Inderlanders.

Inderlanders are the supernaturals. Vamps, pixies, Weres, witches, etc, etc. They actually stepped up and helped stop the extinction of mankind. They’d always been with us in Harrison’s universe but knew a total eradication of humanity wouldn’t be good so they came out of the shadows. Even their help didn’t lessen the blow to humanity that the monsters they thought were just stories were actually real and have been living amongst them for as long as anybody knew. As a result there’s the us vs. them mentality and out of that came two peacekeeping forces. The FIB, Federal Inderlander Bureau, and the IS, Inderlander Security. IS is the policing force made up of supernaturals to keep the bad ones in check. The FIB is human counterpart. The two don’t entirely like one another naturally.

Rachael works for IS, and she’s good. She’s a Witch and a great runner for the IS but keeps getting horrible assignments (tax evading Leprechauns anybody??) and seems to hit a streak of bad luck. She wants out and she knows her boss wouldn’t miss her. Problem is, you can’t just quit the IS. You have to pay off your contract with them. Rachael in effect quits at the beginning of the book thinking that it would be square with her boss because he doesn’t much like her anyway. Problem is she doesn’t have the money. If you can’t pay off your contract they put a price on your head if you leave. With the IS gunning for her, you can see why the book is called Dead Witch Walking.

Rachael leaves anyway and takes Jenks and her living vampire partner Ivy with her. Not only is looking around every corner to keep herself from getting dead a complication but living with a living vamp isn’t exactly what Rachael expected either.

So that’s just a taste of what you can expect from this novel. A witch with a price on her head, a living vampire and a foul mouthed pixie for partners, tax evading leprechauns, pixie/fairy wars, werewolf assassins, demon assassins…All of this and the ability to make a cohesive and great adventure story out of it makes this one heck of a fun read. It’s about as much fun as I’ve had reading a book in a long time.

I look forward to spending more time in this imaginative universe that Harrison has created! Her take on supernatural creatures from myth, lore and fairy tales is great fun and her characters are fun to read. Rachael is fallible and not a psycho shoot first ask questions later vamp slayer like Anita Blake so it’s refreshing to read a new take on a character from a very crowded genre. You’ll have fun with this one!

Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1) Overview

The underground population of witches, vampires, werewolves—creatures of dreams and nightmares—has lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But after a genetically engineered virus wipes out a large part of humanity, many of the “Inderlanders” reveal themselves, changing everything.

Rachel Morgan, witch and bounty hunter with the Inderland Runner Services, is one of the best at apprehending supernatural lawbreakers throughout Cincinnati, but when it comes to following the rules, she falls desperately short. Determined to buck the system, she quits and takes off on the run with an I.S. contract on her head and is reluctantly forced to team up with Ivy, Inderland’s best runner . . . and a living vampire. But this witch is way out of her league, and to clear her name, Rachel must evade shape-changing assassins, outwit a powerful businessman/crime lord, and survive a vicious underground fight-to-the-death . . . not to mention her own roommate.

Charlie is a 32-year-old-man with an IQ of 68 who participates in a procedure involving an experimental surgery designed to increase his intelligence threefold, following in the pawsteps of Algernon, a mouse, who’s successfully survived something similar. Before and after undergoing the procedure, Charlie is tasked by the researchers with journaling his thoughts, feelings and actions. Although one might expect the man’s life experiences to improve significantly post-surgery, the transformation yields unexpected results, as Charlie finally fully comprehends remembered incidents of his past in a new, insightful light. When his IQ exceeds that of the researchers that he’s held in high esteem, things become even more complicated. Flowers for Algernon is a thought-provoking story about several subjects, including society’s stereotypes about humans whose intelligence falls at the fringes. On similar subjects: A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nassar, Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet, and Stuck in Neutral by Terry Trueman.

Flowers for Algernon Overview

Oscar-winning film Charly starring Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom-a mentally challenged man receives an operation that turns him into a genius…and introduces him to heartache.

Flowers for Algernon Specifications

Daniel Keyes wrote little SF but is highly regarded for one classic, Flowers for Algernon. As a 1959 novella it won a Hugo Award; the 1966 novel-length expansion won a Nebula. The Oscar-winning movie adaptation Charly (1968) also spawned a 1980 Broadway musical.

Following his doctor’s instructions, engaging simpleton Charlie Gordon tells his own story in semi-literate “progris riports.” He dimly wants to better himself, but with an IQ of 68 can’t even beat the laboratory mouse Algernon at maze-solving:

I dint feel bad because I watched Algernon and I lernd how to finish the amaze even if it takes me along time.

I dint know mice were so smart.

Algernon is extra-clever thanks to an experimental brain operation so far tried only on animals. Charlie eagerly volunteers as the first human subject. After frustrating delays and agonies of concentration, the effects begin to show and the reports steadily improve: “Punctuation, is? fun!” But getting smarter brings cruel shocks, as Charlie realizes that his merry “friends” at the bakery where he sweeps the floor have all along been laughing at him, never with him. The IQ rise continues, taking him steadily past the human average to genius level and beyond, until he’s as intellectually alone as the old, foolish Charlie ever was–and now painfully aware of it. Then, ominously, the smart mouse Algernon begins to deteriorate…

Flowers for Algernon is a timeless tear-jerker with a terrific emotional impact. –David Langford

Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander) Review

I thought this was a really good book. This was my introduction for Scottish Highlanders and time travel. This book has good romance, and enough fantasy without going overboard. The plot was easy to follow without too many confusing characters. This was one of my favorite in the series and I read it in two days – could not put it down.

Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander) Overview

An alluring laird

He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart – until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland. Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the sixteenth-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm’s length – but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.

A prisoner in time

She had a perfect “no” on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne’s reservations were no match for Hawk’s determination to keep her by his side….
